Halloween will be a sugar coated memory by this time next week. And
while you take the toilet paper down from the trees, many of you will be
putting up the Christmas decorations. While that is obscenely early,
it's not too early for us to plug our next contest. Santa Crossman
returns! This year we will be tracking Santa Claus as he makes his way
around the world on Christmas Eve. This time around, however, our
tracking system will be easier to use with visuals and automatic
updates!!

But that's not all! Our friends at Palm Clix are giving up their cool
micro sized digital cameras for us to hand out to some of the good boys
and girls in our 10 hour Christmas Eve chat. And one very special good
boy or girl will walk away with an amazing 17 inch flat panel LCD
monitor from KDS!!!! Check it out at:
http://www.kdsusa.com/product_details.asp?prod=230&sub=c While
there, read Craig Crossman's column review of another KDS product.

Be sure to follow Computer America because sometime in the month of
November, we will unroll the entry form. AND as a special bonus to our
Buddy List friends (that means you because you subscribe to the email
show reminder) we will be giving away a special gift from HP just for
entering!

Go to http://www.palmclix.com to see the amazing digital camera, and
stay tuned to Computer America for more details on Santa Crossman 2.

Is your computer protected with a firewall? Sobig, blaster, and other
worms can corrupt files, shutdown programs, or wipe out your hard drive.
While anti-virus software can't prevent these types of intrusions, a
firewall can. The ZoneAlarm Pro firewall blocks hackers, worms, Trojans
and 74 types of suspicious email attachments. Zone Labs has teamed up
with Computer America to offer a special opportunity to secure your
computer in a matter of minutes. Protect your PC, save $10 and get bonus
security software, free!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How married are you to your ISP? Can you be lured away from your
current dial up provider for a FREE service provided by in Linux?
71% of our listeners said NO. Oh well. Here are some of the better
comments....
I've had my fill of "free" internet stuff. Sounds like a great deal but
if you begin to depend upon it, they will either go pay or out of biz.
I may use it anyway. I use multiple boxes for may reasons. It is a good
way to keep organized.
Sounds like a nice service -- but I'm happy with my ISP's offering,
supplemented by a couple free email addresses. I'll keep it in mind once
I hear about it, though!
and one anonymous listener summed it up nicely with... "why would I?"
28% of our listeners said they would. Most are using Hotmail and Yahoo.
Some use Outlook. one listener adds...
"Have been using Hotmail for 5yrs. I must be confused & adrift. Linux OS
is probably above my PC skills, but would like a shot at your email
system."
Moltensilicon from Jersey City writes "I'm suffering with yahoo.com"
Now some didn't feel like playing in our reindeer games. One listener
writes this thought "To support a company that helps promote the much
more flexible and less inbred environment of Linux, so that the general
public finally can get exposed enough to Linux to learn it."
Another, our familiar Anonymous Negative Comment Coward, takes a less
productive track with his time and he writes, "Why on earth are you
having a Linux poll on a site which only broadcasts using
Microsoft-proprietary methods? You guys really need to get a clue."
And I agree! After all, a computer and technology show should ONLY
discuss the operating system used by their computers. The thought that
we would try to discuss Apple, or egad, Linux, is appalling. I say
Linux should ONLY be discussed by true geek Linux users who can meet in
an underground vault least some filthy Windows user overhears. Linux is
shaping up to the player for the next decade and this show should not
discuss it. After all, Bob Villa should only reconstruct his own house,
why is he using someone else's house to discuss repairs. He should
really get a clue!
Our new poll question goes up on Mondays. Check out our website at
POLL :
Raise your hand if you have illegally downloaded music before. The RIAA
lawsuits have started. So we wanted to know who has used services in
the past to accept songs into their computers without paying royalties
to the music industry. As promised, we can not trace our answers, so
you can treat the poll as a confessional. Of course if you were stupid
enough to sign your name and home town to your response, we can't help
you there ... like Mr. Jack Slade of Bellmore Long Island!!!
oooo-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah.
anyway....
12% of our listeners say they have smoked but never inhaled. In other
words less than 10 times in their lives they downloaded.
28% of our listeners are a little bolder, downloading music illegally
between 11-50 times.
29% of our listeners are honest, upright citizens who pay their taxes,
always tip, and always leave the toilet seat up, always slow down on
yellow lights as is the law, and never downloads illegal music. Tom
adds this comment.... "I have never found any worth d-loading."
On the flip side, 31% of our listeners have a virtual Tower Records
Store in their computer. Here are some of the more interesting and
surprisingly anonymous comments..... This is all from one listener
1.) The 'music' has already been paid for once
2.) The 'music' is no longer saleable quality, merely 'FM broadcast'
quality and the airwaves are free
3.) The one copy of the 'music' I download is not intended for
commercial rebroadcast or other playback for others to hear, much as a
ring tone resembles the 'music' it is supposed to resemble
4.) The 'music' is not representative of what the artist produces since
it has been so unrecognizably altered from the original in both form and
semblance
5.) I've heard better 'music' from so-called sound-alike groups over the
years where they can be heard on elevators around the world
Another challenges the industry.... "The RIAA can slow down illegal
downloads but I doubt they'll stop it"
Here is a story of True Crime. What a victim.... "I was forced to
download illegal music by my brother, who then burned the files to CD
and sold them at the Swap Shop on weekends."
And of course, the illegal downloader is not the villain as one listener
adds... "The RIAA is totally disconnected from reality. They should
lower their prices and quit ripping off the artists if they want people
to quit downloading."
Our new poll question goes up on Mondays. Check out our website at
